Newsflash Team MILRAM
Dortmund: 20/05/2009
Ronny Scholz had to drop out of the Giro because of continuing back pains. The MILRAM rider complained about severe pains in his back over the last few stages and received treatment for it. But on Tuesday the 31-year-old couldn’t take it anymore and had to leave the Giro d’Italia.
The Importance Of Eating Right.
Thomas Rohegger didn’t have enough to eat yesterday.
“At the finish I could only see stars, and I barely made it though the last 20 of the 264km long stage. I was nauseated in the morning and simply couldn’t eat anything, although I tried to force myself to do so. Taking that into consideration, the 3:20 minutes that I lost today weren’t so bad”
the MILRAM captain said optimistically.
MILRAM Captain Gerdemann & Knees Train Together
After inspecting the most important sections of the Tour de France route, MILRAM captain Linus Gerdemann and Christian Knees went directly to Badenweiler in the Black Forest. Here the two MILRAM riders are training together with teammates Johannes Fröhlinger and Fabian Wegmann for the upcoming Bayern Rundfahrt.
Peter Velits Training in St Moritz
Peter Velits is training in St. Moritz for the Bayern Rundfahrt.
“Until Sunday I am preparing myself here for the second half of the season. I can train well here at 2000 meters above sea level in very mild conditions. That is very comfortable and I think that I will come here again.”

Successful surgery for Matthias Russ!
“I am doing as well as I can be, considering the circumstances. I have been home in Oberried since yesterday evening. The operation went well. Right now I can actually only sit, since every move is painful, but I’m in a good mood. It will be at least four to six weeks before the bones have grown back together. I must have complete rest now for a week. When everything goes well, I ought to be able to get on the home trainer again to train my legs,”
the MILRAM rider said.
Artur Gajek Cancels Planned Appearances
Artur Gajek can’t ride any races right now and has to cancel his planned appearances at the Dutch Food Valley Classic and the Vuelta a Catalunya. The doctors are still looking for the cause of this involuntary racing break. A blood analysis didn’t show anything, whether is a virus or an allergic which has knocked him out. His teammate Dominiki Roels will probably take his place in the one-day Dutch race on Saturday, May 16. The 24-year-old will be replaced by MILRAM captain Gerald Ciolek in Spain.
Milram Markus Fothen supporting Thomas Rohregger
After the first mountaintop finish in the Giro yesterday, MILRAM climber Markus Fothen will support MILRAM Giro captain Thomas Rohregger in the coming mountain stages.
“Tommy” Rohregger’s biggest opponent in Italy is himself. The 26-year-old Austrian is battling not only the climbs and the other riders, but also his typical impatience and hecticness, both during and after the stages.

Cause Of Russ’s Crash Found
MILRAM’s Matthias Russ crashed in the finale of the second stage of the Giro, and one day later the cause has been found. The 25-year-old was brought down by a loose manhole cover on the next-to-last descent of the Montebello. Russ left the team hotel Monday morning to fly from Trieste to Zürich. He will be met there by his wife, who will take him to their home in Oberreid, Germany. The broken collarbone is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, May 12, in a hospital in Freiburg. The whole MILRAM team wishes Matthias “Get well soon!”
If that wasn’t enough, Matthias Russ’s flight home proved to be more complicated than expected. The pilot of the plane, with which Russ was to fly from Trieste to Zürich, at first didn’t want to take the MILRAM rider on board. Because of the air pressure on the plane, the pilot thought that the 25-year-old’s health would be endangered and he could not guarantee a pain-free flight. Only after the team doctor intervened was Matthias Russ finally allowed on board to fly to Zürich.
Things went much easier for Thomas Rohregger, who is being supplied with his mother’s home-baked bread. “Tommy” swears by the home-made specialty for breakfast, and doesn’t have to worry about having enough: Mom Rohregger sends more bread every four days by bread courier.
