Many thanks to Wiggle for picking me to be the winner of the Iron man triathlon kit. This will be very useful as I am currently trying my hand a few triathlons. The trainer I have that entered me in the competition have been great for training and racing in.

This is a picture of me take during the King Sturge Sprint Triathlon on 9th July this year wearing my Iron man training shoes!. Considering it was one of the hottest days of the year so far and i started in the midday sun I my time of 1hr 22mins was reasonable.

I am looking forward to taking part in the Olympic length ITU triathlon in Hyde Park, London on 25 July and aiming for 2hrs 40 mins.

The advent of internet spam means that most of us received regular emails telling us that we have been ‘specially selected’ or ‘chosen at random’ to win a ‘Major Prize’ I was therefore very sceptical when I received an email from Wiggle congratulating me on winning a ‘truly awesome VIP trip to watch stage 17 of the Tour de France”. My scepticism was addressed shortly afterwards when I received a call from Garmin asking for passport details to enable them to book the flights. Being a husband and a father means that heading off to France at the drop of a hat is not as simple as it would be if I was young free and single. Not only will I miss my daughters last day at primary school but also the family holiday is booked for the day after I return from France. Suffice to say, all of the logistics were sorted and flight details confirmed before Mark Cavendish stormed over the line to win Stage 5.

It is only over the last three years that I have become interested in cycling. Having purchased Specialized Rockhopper through the ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme I joined with a group of guys from the village for a weekly mountain bike ride on nearby Woodbury Common. I was then persuaded to enter the annual ‘Force Century Cycle Challenge’ which is a 100 mile cycle to raise funds for an Exeter based cancer charity (www.forcecancercharity.co.uk). After a bit of training and swapping the knobblies for some cheap road tyres, I complete my first 100 mile cycle in 7 hours 45 minutes and was bitten by the road cycling bug. The next step was to purchase a road bike and find another challenge. I purchased a second hand Giant SCR3 and entered the 2009 Exmoor Beast.

Only those of you who gathered in the wind and rain at Butlins, Minehead on 1st November will understand the brutality of this year’s Beast and my survival was further confirmation that I was addicted to road cycling. This year’s big challenge was the Dragon Ride (www.verentidragonride.com) which I completed in an exhausting 9 hours 34 minutes. This was followed a couple of weeks later by a revisit to the 2010 Force Century Cycle Challenge where I managed to knock over 1.5 hours off last year’s’ time getting back to Exeter in good time to see England get knocked out of the World Cup. Doing it on a road bike makes a massive difference but hopefully a little bit of the improvement is down to me being fitter!

In order to satisfy my obsession for maps and figures and hopefully help with my training, I recently purchased a Garmin Edge 500 from Wiggle. Until earlier this week I was blissfully unaware that it qualified me for entry into the competition. It therefore seems even more surreal that, as I watch the highlights of Mark Cavendish fighting it out against the Garmin team, today I will be at the top of the Col du Tourmalet to see a stage finish for real!

Very recently we picked a winner for this amazing VIP trip supplied by the kind folks at Garmin. The lucky winner and their guest will watch the 17th stage of the Tour de France on Thursday 22nd July – Col du Tourmalet. Enjoying full VIP and hospitality access including a fantastic Helicopter trip along the course landing at the finish!!

Suffice to say that 24 hours after receiving the notification of winning, I am still in a state of shock. My first reaction was that it was an Internet scam but when Garmin called to confirm the flight times the reality hit home. Watching Mark Cavendish fighting it out against the Garmin team last night took on a new significance when I realised that in two weeks’ time I will be at the top of the Col du Tourmalet see a stage finish for real.

Mark Firth – 1st Prize Winner

I was very surprised to learn I won first prize of a Mobi Pressure washer after entering a Wiggle Super Series event. I entered two in April, over one weekend (Ups and Downs MTB and Sportive events) which were first class and I really enjoyed taking part in. Due to the rain on the Sundays Sportive I ended up using one of these pressure washers to clean my usually pristine road bike and was pleased with the results obtained before the drive home. This prize will be a welcome edition for future events

I was delighted to receive the prize. The Wiggle Sportive was excellent, one of the best events i’ve done, this prize just tops it! The organisation was superb, a very friendly and professionally run event over a very forgiving course, the 85 miles just flew by!
