Time for a well deserved break

I needed a break from work and wanted to spend some time in open water so I decided to book a trip to the Algarve in Portugal for a Swim Trek holiday. My checklist from the tour company for each day of swimming in the Atlantic Ocean included:

  • Sweater/Fleece
  • Swimming Costume (2 of)
  • Towel(s)
  • Swimming Goggles (2 of)*
  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Walking shoes/sandals
  • Small Daypack
  • Waterproof Sun Cream
  • Aqua Shoes / Sandals (which you don’t mind getting wet!)
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Wetsuit

The checklist came with a disclaimer stating: "It is advisable to have a pair of tinted goggles to cater for glare of the sun in the sea." I had one pair of comfortable googles that were really suitable for open water swimming. I decided to go straight to Wiggle and get another pair of goggles - it was perfect timing as a new exclusive pair of goggles appeared in my search. The Speedo Futura Biofuse Goggles arrived the next day just in time for my holiday flight.

Decision time

Decisions, decisions, do I wear my old or new goggles? My acclimatization swim was only 400m, so I decided I may as well give my new goggles a go and wow! The flexible nose piece made them so very comfortable and I had no issues seeing the buoy bobbing up and down in the ocean. The next few days of swimming involved much longer distances (6.5km, 5km and 3.5km) the old goggles weren’t required! The Speedo Futura Biofuse Goggles performed perfectly all 3 days, in cold water temperatures and choppy water. They enabled me to see the fish below, and I had a perfect view of the safety kayak, the boat above and the amazing cliffs and caves alongside whilst swimming.
