In this Staff Review, we ask Team Wiggle's Kris Collins to give us the low-down on the Fi'zi:k Antares R3 Saddle...
"Find the animal in you"
Finding the saddle that offers you the best fit, is a lot like shoe sizing; every rider is a different size, with different needs.
There are many different techniques and theories to finding the appropriate saddle for the best comfort, but luckily Fi'zi:k offer a straightforward approach with their very own Spine Concept.
After a quick stretch, I came to the easy conclusion that I'm a 'Chameleon' - not quite the most flexible rider, with an intermediate degree of spinal flexibility.
With a good compromise of performance and comfort, I arrived at the Fi'zi:k Antares R3 saddle with Kium rails as my saddle of choice.
The proof is in the pudding
Fitting the saddle into my seat post clamp was super easy, the rails are a standard 7x7mm meaning they'll slot right into most seat post clamps without any issues. The Kium rails are light, stiff and very robust - something most riders are looking for with high performance weight savings and a 'fit and forget' approach.
I've found (over hundreds of hours spent perched on this saddle) the shape of the Antares model to be very supportive; with my sit bones being firmly held, and the shape allowing me to shuffle around over the ride.
The nose of the saddle is long and flat; providing support without any numbness on longer rides. The padding feels firm, yet comfortable - personally I'm not a fan of a super soft saddle, but I also don't like to feel like I'm perched on a brick! The Fizik Antares R3 strikes a great balance - I'm more than comfortable doing back to back days at a training camp, or a stage race.
Choice of the pro's
Fi'zi:k saddles can be seen on the vast majority of professional rigs - with the average professional racing around 80 days per year, and covering approximately 10,000km, it speaks volumes about the quality and comfort offered by Fi'zi:k.
The Italian brand's saddles are a touch of class; with the quality synthetic leather, striking branding, and sublime touch of colour on the wings. I've now splashed out on one for each bike and won't be doing long rides on anything else for some time!
