My first bike build was a daunting one. What frame, what wheels, what groupset? There's an awful lot to choose from! People often forget the 'smaller things' though; things like the contact points and finishing kit; it is this equipment that could be the deciding factor on whether a bike is bad, good or brilliant!

My goal was to build the fastest bike I could, per pound spent. It meant I needed to achieve the delicate balancing act, and constant debate of "it's more expensive, but is it faster?"

With the release of Cyrano R5, Fizik aimed to bring the qualities of their higher end kit (R3 and R1) to market, at a far more affordable price point. The stem, handlebar and seat post are incredibly similar to their high end cousins; with the stunning finish and clamping mechanisms almost identical.

Fizik R5 Handlebars

Not many people know that the fi'zi:k Spine Concept is reflected throughout the Fizik range. It is not just for their market leading saddles; the Snake, Chameleon and Bull translates perfectly into their handlebar collection, too; it offers a wide range of drops and dimensions! The best way to get the right handlebars for you, is to use the fi'zi:k Spine Concept Calculator!

There are 3 different widths to choose from with the Fizik Cyrano R5 Handlebar, and the 420mm version only weighs 320g! (That's pretty light, for a bar that costs the same as 3 pairs of socks.)

Fizik R5 Stem

The fi'zi:k R5 Stem is a simple, clean design. It is stiff, light, and looks great! Available in six different sizes, all with a +/-7 degree angle - there's a stem for everyone.

Fizik R5 Seatpost

The finish of the fi'zi:k R5 Seatpost is the same subtle matte black as the rest of their kit; it's a look that rivals the most expensive posts available on the market.

The R5 seatpost is the only component in the Cyrano R5 range, where the alloy used is noticeably heavier than its carbon counterparts. That said, it still only weighs 250g; which is very good for a 'budget' seatpost!

The clamping mechanism is superb, and uses a clamp and wheel system to keep the saddle secure. The mechanism spreads the clamping force evenly, and allows for micro-adjustments in the tilt of the saddle - perfect if you're a bit OCD!

Summary

The Fizik Cyrano R5 'package' is stiff, light, and it looks great. It is extremely well made, and I think it is quite definitely some of the best value componentry on the market.

For less than £120, these components share the same DNA that makes fi'zi:k the choice of many WorldTour Teams!

If I was building another bike up today, I would choose Fizik Cyrano R5 again. I'm looking forward to getting the most out of these components next year!
