Auro is a home and outdoor audio fitness app; it’s like having your very own audio personal trainer, providing you with hundreds of motivational workouts. Here are Auro’s 5 tips to help you build your at-home fitness routine:
1. Self-Care
By far, self-care is the most important consideration when building your fitness routine. You need to listen to your body and do whatever makes YOU happy. If the thought of doing a sit-up makes you sick to the core, don’t do it. You’re going to despise working out if you do everything you’re not comfortable with, so make sure you really are loving your workouts.
Exercises like skipping and star jumps, burn a lot of calories in a short space of time. The average person burns around 200kcal for 15 minutes of skipping and 50kcal for only 10-20 star jumps! So next time you’re lounging around on the sofa, simply get up, stretch and get 20 star jumps in.
2. Plan It
Planning out your fitness routine helps structure your workouts but it’s also important to keep it realistic.
- Set specific goals: Build your workout routine with a target each day. This could be time, calories burnt or even just staying active.
- Utilise tools to keep you going: Using a fitness app or a smart watch will help to structure your workouts and provide you with motivation to keep going.
- Be flexible: Observe how your body reacts everyday to your routine and keep switching things up if you have to. This will avoid boredom and keep you motivated to progress further.
3. Switch It Up
The latter leading us on nicely to the next point; to always switch things up. To keep your fitness routine fresh and exciting, you should always try and do something different. Why not have a change of scenery once in a while, perhaps move to your garden or balcony or even work out virtually with a friend?
With hundreds of Auro workouts that can be done literally anywhere, rest assured you will never get bored. You could even get creative by using essentials such as a spare tyre, heavy water bottles or even just a towel for added resistance.
4. Love Your Bodyweight
Not all of us have the luxury of owning a home-gym or even any exercise equipment at all and that’s OK. You don’t need to break the bank to enjoy an effective workout, in fact, you don’t need any equipment at all with bodyweight exercises.
Bodyweight HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is one of the most effective ways to burn calories and also build muscle. If you compare a 30-min cardio session on a treadmill with a 30-min HIIT session, the average person will burn around 295kcal on the treadmill and 400kcal with HIIT!
The amazing thing about HIIT workouts are that you still burn calories after you finish with your workout. How you ask? Well, imagine a kettle boiling water. The kettle still remains hot for a short while after it has been boiled. This same concept applies to your heart rate when working out, your body continues to pump blood at a faster rate around your body so even when you’re resting, you’re cooling down and burning calories - don’t you just love your body.
5. Look After Your Diet
It’s easy to give in to 10 cups of tea and coffee a day when it’s so accessible to you at home but it’s so important to stay hydrated. Try to drink at least two litres of water everyday or more if you’re training hard.
You should also attempt to meal prep the night before to avoid snacking or getting stuck when you realise it’s finally lunch time.
Building your fitness routine is by no means easy but just remember that it’s YOURS, so just make sure whatever you decide to do it works best for YOU.
