The latest (and very different!) iteration of the popular Gel Nimbus running shoe from Asics has landed. The shoe is dubbed to be their 'most comfortable shoe ever'. So I put it to the test...
Look and Feel
From the moment you set eyes on the Asics Gel Nimbus 25, you can see a completely different design to the previous version. This is more than a colourway update. It's chunkier, and looks less like a typical run shoe design and more like a big foamy cloud has formed around the midsole. This has been made from new lightweight and energetic FF Blast Plus Eco cushioning.
Asics newest shoe has been designed to provide maximum comfort and cushioning. And you certainly get cushioning with each step. The Gel Nimbus 25 also features new 'PureGEL' technology, which offers enhanced shock absorption which combined with the extra cushioning means each landing feels softer.
Testing The Gel Nimbus 25
I have put the shoes through a few weeks of testing, wearing them on a short slow recovery run, a hill reps session, a race pace session and a Sunday long run. Here's what I found:
The knitted tongue and the collar around my ankle felt like they were designed exactly for my own foot. These two seemingly small features are there to give an 'adaptive fit' and it works. My foot felt snug and secure without having to tighten the laces, almost like a sock.
As soon as you start running you can feel how much cushioning is underneath you. But what I liked about this was it didn't feel clumpy or heavy.
On the slow recovery run, hill reps and Sunday long run (so the majority of my trial sessions) these shoes really came into their own. These are the runs where often my legs are either tired from the session before or my legs start to get lazy. The Gel Nimbus 25 gave me just the right amount of bounce and smooth rolling transition between each stride.
For the race pace session, these didn't quite give me a spring in my step or helping hand to propel me forward, so I would conclude that they are definitely more suited to slower runs.
Who are they for?
If you're looking for an everyday training shoe - this is it. It's great for your slower sessions, recovery runs and long distance training. If you are training for your first event - no matter the distance - these will offer you complete comfort.
