OMM - sounds ominous, right? For a cyclist, who runs at most once a fortnight, it probably should… Tim Wiggins gives us a quick update on preparing for the Original Mountain Marathon, and running in the new Salomon Speedcross 4 GTX shoes and OMM kit.
It all began with a need for change - a need to do more weight bearing exercise, for medical reasons. I've never enjoyed indoor workouts, so the gym was low down on my list of potential solutions. Running, by contrast, was *just* slightly higher up…
So I began running. Just a little at first - like 5 kilometres max; because to be quite honest, it hurt. I gradually added distance and frequency though, and before long the hurt subsided (mostly), and I began to enjoy early morning and late evening trail runs.
An idea to further my running motivation was born, when I heard about the OMM - the Original Mountain Marathon. It is annual running orienteering event - set in a remote mountain location. For the "Points Course", pairs of participants have to find and visit as many "checkpoints" as possible - in a set amount of time, over the course of a weekend (two days). You have to carry your running and camping kit with you throughout the duration of the event, and you all camp together in a remote location on the Saturday night.
Having done similar events in the past, like the Ten Tors Challenge at school, the idea didn't seem too daunting… though the prospect of running for several hours, on back to back days, was a little intimidating. It would provide some motivation to "Run More", anyway…
Kitspiration - OMM run kit and Salomon Speedcross 4 shoes
What else could I do to motivate me to run more? What could I do to make the running more comfortable? Having good kit, seemed like a logical solution…
Salomon Speedcross 4 trail shoes
I've been training for the OMM, in the new Salomon Speedcross 4 GTX shoes. I have always been a Salomon fan; I've converted most of my family to wearing their shoes, too. The kit from the brand is so well made, and the shoes are so comfortable - I have found it hard to find anything else that is as supportive for walking and running.
The new Salomon Speedcross 4 GTX is the pinnacle of off-road running technology. They feature a newly developed tread pattern, for added grip and durability; as well as a waterproof and breathable supportive upper, thanks to Gore-Tex technology. Whether you're running up the mound in your town park, or scaling fells and mountains; these trail running shoes provide comfort, durability and support.
OMM Trail Running Kit
This month I've also been sent some great new kit from OMM themselves; products that are designed to be perfect for the Original Mountain Marathon race, and for trail running in general.
I'll update this blog when I've had a real chance to test them out, but this is the current line-up of apparel I have ready for the event:
- OMM Classic 25 Marathon Pack
- OMM Rotor Smock
- OMM Kamleika II Race Jacket (in a Wiggle exclusive blue/orange colour scheme)
- OMM Kamleika II Race Pants
OMMinous, but exciting…
So the OMM is approaching, fast. My Salomon shoes are well 'broken in' (though very far from being broken). My OMM kit is looking great, and I'll update you with the highlights from the range when I've given it a real 'trail trial run'. Now, I just need to sort out my navigation prowess…
