Seasons have officially changed in the UK. We've packed away our barbecues, flung our flip-flops back in the cupboard and hung up our sun hats. For some, it’s a sad time. But for a lot of people, the start of autumn is considered one of the best times of the year.

Autumn marks the transition from summer to winter. Days become noticeably shorter. Temperatures begin to drop. Trees start to shed their leaves and landscapes take on a golden hue.

It’s a beautiful time of year to be outside so here are five top tips for an amazing autumnal adventure from our friends at Föhn. 

Get out early

The sun rises later during the autumn months, but that’s no reason to start your day late. Pack some torches, grab a flask of tea, and set off before it’s light.

We really love getting out nice and early for so many reasons, and the biggest for us has to be watching the sunrise.

Whether it’s at the summit of a climb or in a field in the countryside, there’s something about a sunrise that’s uniquely mesmerising.

Pack for every weather

Bad weather is inevitable, right? Especially at higher altitudes where you can experience four seasons in one day, so it’s best to pack for any condition.

This is where layering comes into play. You can grab warmth from your fleeces and down jackets, and your waterproof top layer will keep you dry when the rain starts to fall.

Plan a good route

This might sound like a given, but plan a route that you’re looking forward to actually doing. You'll appreciate it so much more.

This doesn't have to be climbing a mountain or walking hundreds of miles. It might be somewhere local walking the dogs.

Make sure you plan ahead so you know where you're going. Give yourself plenty of time to explore before the sun sets! 

Take plenty of snacks

Hiking, walking, kayaking, cycling, anything that involves getting the body moving will require some energy. If you’re anything like us, it’s always good to pack more than enough food and water to keep you going throughout your adventures. There's nothing worse than feeling hungry (or hangry in our cases) or thirsty at the top of a climb with no shop in sight. 

Take photos. Leave no trace

Be kind to nature, we should both enjoy and respect its beauty. We like to say, ‘take photos and leave no trace’ and we really mean it. If you’re wild camping or stopping somewhere for lunch, take your empty food wrappers with you.

The scenery will stay perfect and you will leave knowing you've left no trace of your time there.
